 Heart attack

• Aspirin reduces the risk of death by up to 23 %

• if given when a heart attack is suspected and for 30 days after.

• The use of aspirin in first aid could  save 10,000 lives each year.
  

  Aspirin works to help prevent blood clots

 

• Aspirin helps prevent the blood from clotting.

•  Platelets release a prostaglandin called thromboxane.

• Aspirin inhibits the biosynthesis of thromboxane and prevents the blood from clotting.

• Aspirin should not be used with prescription drugs for  thinning the blood.

Stroke 

• Aspirin is used to reduce the risk of a 2nd heart attack, and aslo can be used under a doctor's direction by stroke survivors to decrease the likelihood of a 2nd stroke.

• Aspirin helps prevent the aggregation of platelets or blood clotting.

• An aspirin regimen may help prevent a second ischemic stroke, but will not prevent hemorrhagic strokes.

• Aspirin use slightly increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke.

 Aspirin is therefore not appropriate for everyone.
